[American Research Institute in Turkey] ‘Rethinking Economic Sources of Hamidian Legitimacy’ by Naz Yücel
February 10, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm EST
This talk revisits the reign of one of the most contested historical figures in Ottoman history, Sultan Abdülhamid II (r. 1876-1909). It questions the financial underpinnings of the Hamidian regime that enabled its sustenance for over three decades by focusing on the Sultan’s Privy Purse. To that end, it provides an overview of the scope and extent of the Sultan’s private finances, supplanted by his private property ownership as well as concessions he brought under his Privy Purse.
